No More Waiting at the Post Office; Now Click-N-Ship

USPSWe don’t do a whole lot of mailing via the US Postal Service anymore, but when we need to, those old nightmarish images come back to mind: standing in an interminable line waiting to deal with someone who does not like their job – or worse yet, someone who loves their job because they think they are hired to neglect and abuse the taxpayers. Well, the other day my wife needed to mail some clothing to a friend. We have a very busy household, and even the simplest of activities can take too much precious time. However…

…Instead of dreading a trip to the post office to stand in line to ship a package, I told her to do it online. Just a short trip to the USPS website.

Creating a label was pretty easy, and filling out the credit card payment info was a breeze using my RoboForm.

On the site, just print the label on your printer (about 4×6 inches), and use your packaging tape to affix it. Then send it from your own mail box, or drop it off in a post office’s out box. With the Priority Mail postage, you get free automatic tracking with Delivery Confirmation.

In all it works pretty well. The only problem is if you have printer troubles. Instead of letting you reprint a label you have problems with you have to either cancel your transaction before you are done, or you have to request a refund online. In my case, the network printer was having a bad day. For one transaction that I cancelled, the USPS interface shows that I was not charged, however, my bank shows that I was. And for one version of the label for which I was charged, the label did not print, but yet my bank account was charged. So, I requested a refund that might take up to 14 days to process. And, the third label printed fine and of course charge me for it. So now I have 3 charges for $4.60 per my bank, and 2 for $4.60 per USPS, and will have to watch it over the next few days and deal with it.

However, in all other cases my experience has been very good with Clicking N Shipping. If you do lots of mailing, you can download the desktop application, Shipping Assistant.

Happy mailing!

OK, my refund from the USPS.gov website has come through. I hope that the interest they earned on MY money will be put to good use for the betterment of mankind or other fellow customers!
